Tips for Headache Relief

Man holding his forehead looking for Headache Pain Treatment Crown Point.

Headaches are one of the most common complaints among our patients at Motus Integrative Health. The World Health Organization estimates that about half of adults regularly experience headaches, and the symptoms can be debilitating in some cases. While it’s not possible to prevent every headache, patients can prepare in advance to deal with symptoms effectively as they happen. Below, our chiropractors provide six tips to reduce head pain intensity and frequency while supporting your overall health. Contact our office today to start your wellness journey.

Use a Hot or Cold Compress

When you feel the start of a headache coming on, you want relief as soon as possible. One of the most tried-and-true methods for immediate headache relief is by using a cold or hot compress. Migraines are sometimes managed by applying a cold pack to the forehead for about 15 minutes at a time. Wrap ice cubes in a towel, use an ice bag or take a cold shower. Heat can also be used to treat headaches. Tension headaches, particularly those that occur in the neck and shoulders, can be treated by targeting the muscle tension in those areas.

Dim the Lights and Avoid Electronics

When you are in the middle of a migraine, it may be painful to look at bright lights. Photophobia is a common symptom of migraine headaches, and as a result, it is often best to go to a dark room and close your eyes. Blackout curtains and sunglasses can also reduce the impact of lights and even help prevent migraines that are triggered by flickering light sources from screens.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is an important part of our well-being. If possible, take a short nap and allow yourself to rest rather than trying to work through the pain. Additionally, focus on improving your sleep for long-term relief. Evidence suggests that sleeping too much or too little is closely tied to headaches and migraines.

Establish Healthy Habits

While many people understandably wish to prevent headaches altogether, headaches happen regardless of our best efforts. That being said, there are a few healthy habits that can reduce the chances of headaches, as well as provide relief when you are in the midst of one:

  • Hydrate. One of the most common causes of headaches is dehydration. Be sure to drink enough water throughout the day, and try to avoid beverages with too much caffeine.
  • Manage Stress. If you have frequent tension headaches, especially with neck and shoulder pain, they may be caused by ongoing stress. Understanding proper stress management techniques is key to preventing headaches and reducing pain when you’re in the middle of one.
  • Exercise Regularly. Exercise is one of the best ways to improve your overall physical and mental well-being. If your headaches are triggered by stress, exercise releases endorphins which can help improve your mood and therefore reduce the risk of headaches.
