What is RockTape ®? RockTape® is a brand name used for kinesiology tape. Acupuncturists and chiropractors in Japan first used this type of tape, however, now kinesiology tape is used by practitioners throughout the world to treat injuries and improve sports performance. The tape creates a decompression effect by lifting the skin away from painful muscle and fascia areas. The tape helps reduce inflammation as well. RockTape® is made from 97% cotton and 3% nylon. The tape is hypo-allergenic, acrylic-based with no latex, water-resistant and can be worn for 2 to 5 days.
RockTape® is used by professionals to expedite the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints. What is unique about taping the affected area is that the body’s range of motion is not restricted. Your practitioner can also perform soft tissue manipulation techniques on patients with taped areas.
Believe it or not, kinesiology tape is designed to interfere with the pain signals in your body. Have you ever banged your shin, then you rub it, and suddenly realize your shin doesn’t hurt anymore? This kinesiology tape acts like your hands and interferes with pain signals being directed to your brain. When these signals are altered, there is no sensation of pain. At Motus Integrative Health, when we apply kinesiology tape on our clients’ painful areas, many clients call it “magic tape” or think that their injury is now fixed.
When RockTape® is applied to the skin, the tape allows for a little lifting effect underneath and between the many layers of skin. The result is increased blood flow to and from the taped area, and also quickens the removal of swelling and inflammation by-products. It does so by allowing congested or compressed blood vessels to flow more freely. It also creates more room in between layers of fascia, muscle, fat, skin, and other structures.
Research has shown that when kinesiology tape is put on the skin, it can reduce muscle fatigue. The result is diminished pain, including the surrounding areas of the painful muscle as they help to pick up the slack for muscles that are not working as they should.
When someone is injured, fatigued, or inflamed, muscle action throughout the area can atrophy. Research indicates that people who sprain their ankles tend to have altered activity of their hip muscles as a result. RockTape® helps restore dormant muscles and helps relax the overactive muscles. It helps your body coordinate movement as if you were pain-free, allowing proper healing. Unlike conventional taping, which is applied to prevent all movement, RockTape® is applied to allow full movement of the taped area. Through elastic properties and quick recoil, RockTape® can help distribute forces to other nearby areas through the fascia, ligaments, and even bones.
