Physical Therapy for Pain

When you have chronic pain in your joints, it is challenging to know what health direction to take. Do you continue to take pain medication every day, even though you don’t like the side effects?  Do you opt for surgery? Do you do nothing? There are many options to choose from to reduce the pain. However, one of the best that researchers have discovered is the combination of physical therapy and chiropractic care.

Physical therapy offers many benefits for pain relief. Physical therapists are trained to find the source of the pain, explain it to the patient, and then use exercise to treat the symptoms. For instance, some of the physical therapy that can be used to manage your pain are:

  • Low-impact aerobic training. Low-impact aerobic training is excellent for increasing your heart rate and taking it easy on your joints. For instance, your therapist might ask you to walk fast on the treadmill or tell you to use the stationary bike to warm up before you move on to your strengthening exercises.
  • Strengthening exercises. Many physical therapists have exercise machines in their office, just like the gym, and will show you exactly how to use them to get the results you want. You may use resistance bands, or even your body weight to learn how to do perfectly formed lunges, squats, and pushups. Most likely you will work on those essential core muscles which are your abdominals, glutes, and back.
  • Pain relief exercises. Pain relief exercises are tailored especially for you and adapted to relieve your pain.  The exercises will target the areas where you have pain, such as your shoulder or knee. The results from the workouts will leave you more flexible and stronger, therefore allowing you to have a greater range of motion.
  • Basic Stretching. Basic stretching is very subtle. First, you will warm up with your therapist then you will be watched, so you don’t overdo it and try to do too much with your stretching exercises.

What are the Benefits of Physical Therapy?

There are many benefits of physical therapy. First, you will learn the correct way to exercise. The form is the most crucial part of an exercise. If you are not correctly positioned when you are doing an exercise, you can really hurt yourself. The result can be a sprained ankle, or you can pull your shoulder out of its socket.

Another benefit is that you will learn how to control pain. Your physical therapist will find the source of that pain and explain what your options are to treat it. Often strengthening the body will solve many issues that cause pain. At Motus Integrative Health we have physical therapists on staff who can work with you, one-on-one to develop an exercise plan that you can do forever.
