First of all, it is not all in your head like many people might tell you.  Yes, a nervous stomach and large amounts of caffeine can cause loose bowel movements but Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is a different condition from these.  IBS has become a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning many practitioners don’t know what the cause is. Up to 50% of clients are misdiagnosed with similar symptoms only to experience side effects from medications given to control it.  Up to 40 MILLION people have been diagnosed with IBS. Why is this information important? Because between 70-80% of your immune system is housed in your gut and 90% of your Serotonin (a joy giving neurotransmitter) is produced there.
One of the largest contributors for many people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome is alteration in the gut microflora, which is the bacteria that normally live and work in our gut. Any number of things can interfere with the health and wellbeing of our gut microflora. Â First, a breakdown in foods to sugars is what fuels an imbalance of gut bacteria and can lead to what is called small intestine bacterial overgrowth. High-carb diets of white flours, processed foods, sugars and yes, even beans and rice or grains of all kinds can help the bacteria remain overgrown. Â Constipation and low stomach acid contribute, as does just a single medication dose of Ibuprofen, Aspirin or antacid. Long-term antacid use is even more harmful, and these drugs were never intended for use over several weeks. Chronic stress and even hypothyroidism can affect gut health and balance.
Symptoms of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or SIBO may include:
These symptoms are all indicators of inflammation, which can lead to autoimmune issues. Thyroid disorders and SIBO can be related.
