Back pain is one of the most common conditions in America. Experts estimate that one-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain each year (1) and that as much as 80% of the American population will experience back pain at some point in their lives (2). A worldwide study performed in 2010 identified low back pain as the single leading cause of disability worldwide (3).
Many factors may cause or contribute to back pain but it is very common in the majority of cases for the primary cause of back pain to be mechanical in nature, typically from less than optimal body mechanics and movements performed repetitively over time. This means that cancer, inflammatory conditions like Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and infection are not commonly the cause of back pain but rather the minority.
